Xzibit revealed that he was only paid $5,000 an episode for Pimp My Ride from MTV.
The rapper revealed the figure during a recent interview in which he explained how what success looks like can be different from what’s happening in reality. “Your perception of success and what it actually is are two different things,” began Xzibit.
“When we got on MTV, I think the agents I was with signed some bullshit ass deal and we didn’t know it was going to be what it was,” Xzibit continued. “It was like $5,000 an episode. I thought that they would play my music videos, but obviously they didn’t.”
Frustrated with the figure, Xzibit revealed that the situation became worse as time progressed. “As things started going on and on, I wasn’t happy because I’m not able to tour and go do other things,” he explained.
Xzibit then claimed that the situation really turned sour when Viacom started to pay him less. “My deal with Viacom and MTV, they knew they were paying me shit,” he said, before explaining that he was told by the company that he would receive 15% of all the merchandise. “There was fine print that said ‘anything that includes your name and likeness.’ First season, you look at the box, my face is on it. Every season after that, it’s just a car.”
The cuts allegedly didn’t end there. “When they went to syndication, they edited my music out so they didn’t have to pay me,” Xzibit alleged.
This isn’t the only time that Xzibit has spoken up about Pimp My Ride recently. During a recent interview with Metro UK, the rapper opened up about why the show ended.
“You really want the truth about why Pimp My Ride only lasted six seasons?… Some people don’t want their childhood ruined,” he said. “It ended because my contract was up and I didn’t want to renew it. I was on my way out the door at 20th Century Fox after filming the last episode, and it was like, ‘Yo, all good things must come to an end.’ I’m good. I’m very good. I’m shaking hands and I’m like, ‘Okay guys, contract’s up, I don’t want to renew. I’m out.”
